Two killed as storm lashes Dhaka

A storm in Dhaka left at least two persons dead as gusty winds have felled trees, blown away billboards and moved off bricks from under-construction buildings on Sunday evening.

Locally known as Kalboishakhi, the nor’wester stirred up around 6:00pm and was soon on full stem with heavy winds and thundershowers. 

One tea vendor was killed after bricks fell at Paltan and a tree crushed another woman on evening walk near Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban after the storm.

Mili de-Costa, 62, a resident of Monipuripara, died after a tree fell on her on Lake Road around 6:00pm, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jan-e-Alam Munshi said.

A tea vendor of Paltan, Md Hanif, 50, died after bricks fell on him from an under-construction building, said Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Information of broken twigs and tree branches were also reported through Kakrail, Mirpur and other areas, but a comprehensive outlook was still unavailable at the newsroom.

According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department, wind speed rose upto 74kmph during the nor’wester. The report on average rainfall could not be obtained.
